He was born in 1959 on the 25th of December in the Sangli district of then-Bombay State (now Maharashtra) to a Marathi family. Ramdas is the son of Honsabai Bandu and Bandu Athawale. He graduated from Siddharth College of Arts and Science and entered politics in the year 1974 after being associated with a movement called Dalit Panther to stand against Dalit people’s oppression in society. He practices the Buddhist religion and is also the founding president of a Bauddha Dhamma Parishad. Ramdas was elected to the legislative council of Maharashtra and served as a member for six years while also holding key positions in the government including the cabinet ministry of social welfare, youth welfare, and transport.

For his political affiliations, he has himself founded a political party and named it the Republican Party of India which stands for empowerment of oppressed people in the Indian society. He has been always active in the upliftment of such sections of society which was disadvantageous for ages. He served his first parliamentary term as a Lok Sabha member from Mumbai North Central constituency for one year and was then elected in the 13th Lok Sabha elections to serve a second term from the Pandharpur seat of Maharashtra.
